Lyons is a founding member of The Brown Bookshelf. Her first book, NEATE: Eddie’s Ordeal, is one of many trailblazing children’s books published by Just Us Books. Kelly is caught reading Escape from Hurricane Katrina by Judy Allen Dodsen.
The Brown Bookshelf is designed to push awareness of the myriad Black voices writing for young readers. A leader in the children’s book diversity movement, they were the 2019 winners of the CBC Diversity Outstanding Achievement Award, a partner of the Children’s Book Council on book lists and program sponsorships, and, now, an Every Child a Reader and Get Caught Reading partner.
